Power of attorney and your USS pension

Give someone you know the ability to make decisions on your behalf

What is a lasting power of attorney and how does it work?

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a way of giving someone you know the ability to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do this yourself. It is a legal document that appoints the person you have chosen – your ‘attorney’ – to have control over decisions that affect you if you lose your mental clarity such as choosing what to do with your finances.

You can make and register your power of attorney via the government website.

If you are a chosen attorney for a USS member, you’ll need to provide us with the following information before any action is taken on their behalf:

  • An access code that we can use to view the lasting power of attorney. This can be obtained through the Office of Public Guardian website
    OR
  • Post the original or certified copy of the lasting power of attorney to our Liverpool office: USS, 3rd floor, Royal Liver Building, Liverpool, L3 1PY
  • We also require a signed letter confirming the correspondence address we should use for you regarding the lasting power of attorney.
